Colorful Golden Beads – technological characteristics of copper picking

Copper picking uses no paper but copper foil, the historical specialty of Foshan-a kind of metal film thinner than paper. In production, the artist first carves a small part of the contour of the picture on the copper foil and then puts the copper foil on hard wood chopping block, and uses specially made mini bead chisel(also called bead knife) to pick round dots to form “beads” bit by bit on the copper foil according to the pattern, and then picks “reversely” to make corresponding round dots beside the beads in the back. Color filling is done base on this. Mineral Powder pigments are used, such as lead powder, ultramarine, vermillion, mineral green, mineral blue, and such non-transparent mineral pigments, and mixed with cowhide as bonding material for firmness. Such pigments are of strong colors, without fading through tens of hundreds of years, adding brilliance to each other with copper foil and copper beads, colorful and dazzling, lastingly unchanged. Foshan Folk Art Research Institute brings the unique skills of copper picking back to life and hopes it will become essence of Foshan folk arts to go out of Foshan and to the world again.
